Dear students,

The COVID-19 university and higher education institution ordinance of the Federal Minister (C-UHV) has been published. The University of Vienna has adapted its own regulations according to this ordinance. We would like to inform you about the most important changes to our provisions.

  • Extension of the period of grace and suspension of the period when there are no classes
The period for enrolling or re-enrolling on a degree programme in the summer semester 2020 is extended (from 30 April 2020) to 30 June 2020. You can pay the tuition/ÖH fees by the end of the period of grace. More information can be found at slw.univie.ac.at/en/studying/tuition-fee/. The period when there are no classes in the summer of 2020 is suspended.

  • Extension of the submission period for partial achievements
Due to the extension of the period of grace to 30 June 2020, you also have the opportunity to complete missing partial achievements for courses of the winter semester of 2019/2020 by this date. Please inform your teacher about the intended completion of your partial achievement (see also University Library below).

  • Taking a leave of absence from studies
You can apply for a leave of absence for unforeseen and inevitable statutory reasons until 30 June 2020. If you are studying remotely and/or if you want to take exams, you can withdraw any leave of absence that has already been approved until 30 June 2020. Further information will be available soon on the following website: slw.univie.ac.at/en/studying/admission-procedure/leave-of-absence/ The COVID-19-related reasons for taking a leave of absence according to the ordinance of the Federal Minister will be discussed within the University.

  • Tuition fees
The University of Vienna will not remit tuition fees, unless there is a statutory reason for remission (see slw.univie.ac.at/en/studying/tuition-fee/remission/). Make use of the wide range of teaching and exam offers of the University of Vienna in the summer semester.

  • Curricula that are being phased out
The list of degree programmes that are being phased out and which the University of Vienna now extends for an additional semester (to 30 April 2021), will be available soon under slw.univie.ac.at/en/studying/study-organisation/remote-learning/. The deadline for the completion of the diploma programme in Teacher Education is extended to 28 February 2021 according to the ordinance of the Minister. Nevertheless, please seize the opportunity to take digital exams in this semester.

  • Opening of the Vienna University Library
The online resources provided by the Vienna University Library remain accessible and are continuously being expanded. Limited lending services at the Vienna University Library are scheduled to gradually resume from mid-May. We will inform you continuously.

  • Exams
In this exceptional situation, the following rules apply:

    • Methods applied in and concepts of courses as well as assessment methods, assessment criteria and assessment elements for exams can be changed during the course of the semester. This may be necessary because at the time when the courses were announced, it was not yet clear how long the period of remote learning would last and that digital exams have to be held.
    • Teachers have to provide information on u:find about the methods, the implementation, the assessment criteria and the assessment elements for exams in due time prior to the exam, but no later than the start of the period of exam registration. The registration period lasts for 14 days, at least. You have to register for or deregister from the exam via u:space. Please deregister in due time if you cannot take the exam.
    • There will be three exam dates for course exams, module examinations and subject examinations during the semester.

  • Courses with continuous assessment:
The University asked its teachers to adapt their teaching concept and modes of assessment to remote learning and digital exams. These adaptations should be communicated to the participants and made transparent on u:find until 30 April 2020. If these adaptations diverge from the previous modalities, you have the opportunity to deregister, without any negative consequences, from the course within one week from notification according to the C-UHV. All participants who did not deregister, must be assessed.

Your teachers and our administrative staff are already working hard to be able to hold online exams and to gradually resume teaching. Teachers and the SSCs will provide updated information about these changes on u:find and on the SSC websites no later than 30 April 2020. Please contact your SSC by e-mail if you have any problems, e.g. missing information about courses or exams. Please check your u:account e-mail address regularly, if possible, since we will continue to send you relevant information by e-mail.

I would like to thank you for your perseverance and patience. Stay healthy.
